What Are Your Rights Under the Jones Act?
After an on-the-job accident, injured seamen are entitled to "maintenance and cure," which is essentially workers' compensation for seamen. If you have been injured in an off-shore accident, your medical bills will be paid until you reach "maximum medical improvement." Additionally you will receive maintenance, or partial wage replacement.
Once you have reached "maximum medical improvement," you may no longer be eligible for any medical assistance. However, if you can prove that the vessel owner was at fault, you can also seek compensation for lost wages, medical expenses, pain and suffering.
